Synopsis
In one devastating night, violin prodigy Etta Spencer loses everything she knows and loves. Thrust into an unfamiliar world by a stranger with a dangerous agenda, Etta is certain of only one thing: she has traveled not just miles but years from home. And she’s inherited a legacy she knows nothing about from a family whose existence she’s never heard of. Until now.

Nicholas Carter is content with his life at sea, free from the Ironwoods—a powerful family in the colonies—and the servitude he’s known at their hands. But with the arrival of an unusual passenger on his ship comes the insistent pull of the past that he can’t escape and the family that won’t let him go so easily. Now the Ironwoods are searching for a stolen object of untold value, one they believe only Etta, Nicholas’ passenger, can find. In order to protect her, he must ensure she brings it back to them—whether she wants to or not.

Together, Etta and Nicholas embark on a perilous journey across centuries and continents, piecing together clues left behind by the traveler who will do anything to keep the object out of the Ironwoods’ grasp. But as they get closer to the truth of their search, and the deadly game the Ironwoods are playing, treacherous forces threaten to separate Etta not only from Nicholas but from her path home... forever.

Review
Overall opinion: I really enjoyed this novel! It started out a little slow in my opinion but once I was passed that, I really got into it and practically binge-read the rest of the book!! And OMG that ending!! It left me mind blown!! Which is always a good thing!! Another reason why it’s good: it’s about time traveling!! And I absolutely love a good time travel book :)

Writing: The writing was really well done!! Nice to read and not too shady :) since the concept of time traveling can sometimes be a bit hard to understand, it is important that the author wrote it in an understandable way, and Alexandra Bracken did that really well!! And I loved it that she wrote in both Etta’s and Nicholas’ point of view. This really added to the story in my opinion!! It gives you the ability to see the story from both sides. There was also some really inspirational advice in some part in the book like my favourite quote (see General Info :) )

Plot: The plot was outstanding!! I really loved the story in general!! Even though the concept of time travel has been done so many times before, Alexandra Bracken still managed to create an original, exciting and gripping story!! I really loved how she described how time traveling works in her book, through passages. It was really interesting to read about it and I hope we will learn more about it in the sequel!! And like I said before the ending is PHENOMENAL!!

Characters: I loved most of the characters! I just didn’t understand some of the choices Etta’s mother made and that’s way she came across as a bit harsh at certain times. I really loved reading both Etta’s and Nicholas’ P.O.V.’s it really gave me more insight into their personalities and they are both so amazing!! Etta is such a strong young woman!! She manages to handle every frightening situation so well even though she is far from home and doesn’t know what is happening. And I also really really like Nicholas, I love how he is so ambitious and he works very hard for the things he wants, he is also really kind even though he didn’t have the easiest youth!!

Relationships: I really appreciate the fact that there isn’t a love triangle in this story, don’t get me wrong love triangles can be really fun to read if they are well written and I have read quite a few books with love triangles that I absolutely adored!! But is nice to read about two people who love each other and know it instead of the doubt that goes with love triangles. So I really loved Etta and Nicholas!! They fit so well together!! The relationship between Etta and her mom however is a bit weird in my opinion. I am not precisely sure how that one works :)

Layout: STUNNING!!! Look at that cover!! I am in love with it :) and when you take the dust jacket off the book is just as beautiful with the silver tree on the front!! (if you have the hardcover edition) I really love the swirls that mark each new chapter as well!!

Flaws: The only thing that disappointed me a bit was the slow beginning, for some reason it took me a while to get into it… but the rest of the book made up for that!!

Sum-up: So in short, this book is absolutely amazing with a great plot!! Very original with lovely characters!! If not for the slow beginning I would have given it a 5 star review but I decided to give it a 4,25 instead, still very good though!!! Certainly worth the read!! I can’t wait for the sequel!!
