Fangirl - Rainbow Rowell

General Info
Rating: ★★★★★

Where I got it: Local bookstore

Short reaction: aww *squealing* they’re so cute!!

Fav Quote: “Because I'm the kind of girl who fantasizes about being trapped in a library overnight.”

Cath is a Simon Snow fan.

Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan...

But for Cath, being a fan is her life—and she’s really good at it. She and her twin sister, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow series when they were just kids; it’s what got them through their mother leaving.

Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fan fiction, dressing up like the characters for every movie premiere.

Cath’s sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can’t let go. She doesn’t want to.

Now that they’re going to college, Wren has told Cath she doesn’t want to be roommates. Cath is on her own, completely outside of her comfort zone. She’s got a surly roommate with a charming, always-around boyfriend, a fiction-writing professor who thinks fan fiction is the end of the civilized world, a handsome classmate who only wants to talk about words... And she can’t stop worrying about her dad, who’s loving and fragile and has never really been alone.

For Cath, the question is: Can she do this?

Can she make it without Wren holding her hand? Is she ready to start living her own life? Writing her own stories?

And does she even want to move on if it means leaving Simon Snow behind?

Overall opinion: OMG this book was so cute!!! I absolutely loved it!! I wish I’d read it sooner! I heard a lot of amazing things about it but I was still hesitant to pick it up, I don’t even know why! :) And I’m so happy I finally read it!! It was so good!! And very relatable because I consider myself a fangirl too :) maybe not as extreme as Cath because I don’t write fanfics but definitely still a fangirl!

Writing: Rainbow Rowell’s writing style was so fun and easy to read! I practically flew though this book!! The things she wrote were, like I mentioned before, super relatable which made this a lot of fun to read! I also really loved those little Simon Snow scenes in between all the chapters!! That made me really excited to read Carry On, the fanfic Cath is working on which has been written as an actual book by Rainbow Rowell!!!

Plot: The plot was really good!! It was funny, relatable, super cute and so much more!! I loved reading about Cath’s experiences in college with her dorm room mate Reagan and with Levi. That was so much fun!! Especially the conversations between Cath and Reagan, they were hilarious!! I also really liked the underlying story about Cath her sister Wren and their home situation with their mom and dad! That was the more serious part of the story which made it a perfect mix of humour and seriousness.

Characters: All of the characters were so good and amazingly written!!! My favourite character is definitely Cath’s dad!! I loved him, he was amazing!!! And Levi of course!! He is such a sweetie!! I loved all of them so much!! They all had their own unique personality!

Relationships: Same goes for the relationships! Really well written and so unique! I loved the friendship between Reagan and Cath, it was so funny!! The relationship between Cath and her dad was also really interesting and so well done!! Rainbow Rowell really knows how to write really good character centred books!!

Layout: The book itself is gorgeous as well!! I really like the simplicity of its cover! This goes to show that a book doesn’t always need a piece of art as a cover (not that I don’t appreciate that because I really do J

Sum-up: So in short, Fangirl was an amazing book!! Funny, cute with realistic situations and unique and loveable characters!! I’d really recommend it if you love reading contemporary or/and if you are a fangirl yourself!!

  1. I've recently finished Fan Girl too and I adored it! There's just something about Cat's story that's just so relatable. I think all of us fan girls and book nerds alike have a little of her in us.

    1. Yeah that's true! Cat is in all of us! :)
